The Truckee Donner Railroad Society and the Truckee Donner Recreation & Park District celebrated the opening of the kids’ riding train with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the first train rides on September 14th. The train tracks circle the playground in Truckee River Regional Park. This project was completed as a consequence of volunteer hours, cash donations and in-kind donations. Expansion of the track is planned along with a historically-accurate snow shed. The Society has applied for a grant from the Union Pacific to set up a children’s educational experience which would include the meaning of horn signals and crossing arms as well as railroad history. More opportunities for train rides will be on September 28, October 11 and October 25 between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Check out the Sierra Sun article for details.
