According to the Weather Channel, average annual snowfall in Truckee over a period of 30 years has been 202.6 inches. In the rankings, Truckee follows Hancock, Michigan, with 211.9 inches; Crested Butte, Colorado, 215.3 inches; and Valdez, Alaska, 326.3 inches. The 2010-2011 was a record year for snowfall in the region; Squaw Valley reported 510 inches at 6200 feet and 810 inches at 8200 feet.
“Professional meteorologist and long-range forecaster Rob Guarino predicts above average snowfall for Squaw Valley for the 2013-2014 winter,” according to an article in the Sierra Sun. However, in the same article, Alex Hoon, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Reno, said “we can go either way—above normal with precipitation, and the same chance of a drought, a dry year.” Obviously, residents and visitors are hoping for another record year. The last two have been disappointing at 182.5 and 183 inches of snowfall at 6200 feet. To read the complete article, click on the Sierra Sun website.
