Western States 100-mile Endurance Run. June 28-29, 2014, at 5:00 am. It is the oldest and most prestigious 100-mile trail race. This run is not for the faint of heart. The course begins in Squaw Valley and ends 100.2 miles later in Auburn, California, and follows the original trails used by gold and silver miners of the 1850s. The total elevation gain is 18,000 feet followed by a descent of 23,000 feet. Most of the trail runs through remote and rugged territory. “Adequate mental and physical preparation is of utmost importance to each runner, for the high mountains and deep canyons, although beautiful, are relentless in their challenge and unforgiving to the ill-prepared.” For more information, click on the Western States 100 website.
