The Great Ski Race, a 30 kilometer cross country race, will be held this year on March 2, 2014. We all have our fingers crossed as we wait for more snow. The race begins at the Tahoe XC Ski Area east of Tahoe City on Dollar Hill, and finishes in Truckee where a party is waiting. The race course climbs from 6,500 feet in elevation, out of the Tahoe Basin, over Starratt Pass at 7,770 feet, and descends in a long winding drop through the Sawtooth Range to Truckee.
The very popular race is a local favorite and the primary fund-raising event each year for the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team. This all volunteer organization is a non-profit and relies on donations to support the team. The goals of the team are to provide fast and safe rescues, and to conduct winter safety training courses.
