The original plan for California State Parks to take over management of Kings Beach State Recreation Area on November 1st has been scrapped, and the new plan is to take over on May 15th. North Tahoe Public Utility District has been responsible for operations of the park since its establishment in 1978. The contract between State Parks and North Tahoe PUD expired December 5, 2008. However, the PUD has continued its management operations on a month-to-month basis since that time. On April 15th North Tahoe PUD informed State Parks of its board’s decision to terminate park operations.
A section of the parking lot will be used to store equipment and materials for the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project resulting in lost parking revenue. According to a negotiated agreement, Placer County is paying State Parks $115,746 for the use of the area for two years. The PUD, on the other hand, was not a party to the negotiations, will not receive any funding, and cannot continue operations without revenue. State Parks is confident that it will be able to transfer management and operations of the park without significant interruption in services and events. Their intention is to keep the recreation area and parking lot open year-round, according to Vicky Waters, deputy director of public affairs for California State Parks.
