The Incorporate Olympic Valley movement has encountered opposition from Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, owners of the Squaw Valley ski area and 51% of Alpine Meadows, and Save Olympic Valley(SOV), an alliance of residents, property owners and businesses in the valley. On their website and in regularly appearing full page advertisements in the local newspapers Save Olympic Valley has expressed doubt about the financial feasibility of the proposed incorporated town of Olympic Valley. Their advertising cites draft budgets as “far-fetched” and potentially contributory to financial shortfalls or bankruptcy (download SOV Ad 8-22-14). Squaw Valley Ski Holdings has funded Save Olympic Valley in the amount of approximately $253,000 which pays for professional services, campaign literature, mailings and advertising.
Incorporate Olympic Valley has posted on their website a response to the Save Olympic Valley claims entitled “Myths And Truths.” Incorporate Olympic Valley has raised $100,000 for their efforts, and have had expenditures of a $25,000 deposit to LAFCO (Local Agency Formation Commission), $51,750 for the Comprehensive Fiscal Analysis and may have in the future an unknown expenditure for an environmental analysis.
If the incorporation proposal receives approval from LAFCO, which could take as much as another 18 months, a vote by Olympic Valley residents, that are registered voters, will follow. If 51% of the voters vote yes the valley will become an incorporated city.
