What does weather and conditions permitting mean?
Well, what does every skier and snowboarder need to have a great time? Yes, SNOW! Most ski resorts are dependent on natural snowfall, even if they add to the total with artificial snow. If there is an unexpected warm or dry spell, conditions may not be optimal for snow sports of any kind…so as we do every year, we’re asking Mother Nature to send her best powder our way as early as possible so we can open on time with plenty of snow for everyone!
What’s the snowfall predicted to be this year?
The last few years have been predicted to be lower-than-average snowfall, and lived up to that disappointing total annual snowfall…although not the ideal number of inches by any means, we still had enough to enjoy the slopes and get plenty of time on our skis and boards, never fear!
This year? This year we are awaiting the white stuff with bated breath. Everyone has been talking about the El Nino rolling in this year finally being in OUR favor!
UnofficialNetworks has been predicting a greater-than-average snowfall in the Tahoe-Truckee area since July, due to the NOAA predictions of the biggest El Nino in 50 years. OnTheSnow has been more conservative, predicting a normal snowfall, which is still better than we’ve gotten in the last few years.
2014 saw a total snowfall of 223 inches, with 33 snowfall days and an average base depth of 24 inches.
2013 saw a total snowfall of 141 inches, with 26 snowfall days and an average base depth of 29 inches.
Average total snowfall is 407.4 inches for the region, far higher than the last few years…so an average snowfall year would be fantastic for those of us who love to ski and snowboard!
Make your plans now to enjoy the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows Opening Days this 2015-16 season…we’re betting on great snowfall, on-time opening days, and an amazing season on the slopes and bowls!
