While visitors think preparing to ski until July 4th is an exaggeration, locals know there HAS actually been a year where skiers were on the slopes on Independence Day! Whether or not the slopes stay open into July, the amazing amount of snowfall we’ve seen this winter has many Squaw Valley skiers hoping for a longer than average ski season!
Accuweather.com says “In the first month of the year, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows in Olympic Valley, California, had snow totals that were 405 percent of their usual average for January. While the average January snowfall for the past 45 years sits at 70 inches, January 2017 capped out at a total of 282 inches of snow.”
After the drought-ridden seasons of 2013-14 and 2014-15, it’s a relief to see the snowfall and storms back where they belong. Resorts are pleased to have the reverse problems this year, having to dig out lifts and parking lots to stay open!
Get out and enjoy your skis this year, it’s already a great season, and we’re hoping it lasts right into the summer months!
