A 30 minute, beautiful drive, north of Truckee on Hwy 89, takes you to Sierra Valley in eastern Sierra County, the largest alpine valley in North America.  Surrounded by mountains the towns of Sierraville, Calpine, Loyalton and Sattley, offer that historic flavor of Victorian homes and ranches dating back to the 1800s.

Travel west on Hwy 49, past Bassets Station and the Sierra Butts, into Sierra City and then on to Downieville (California’s 5th largest city in the mid 1850s) to get a feel of the days of the Gold Rush.  Or turn north at Bassets Station onto Gold Lakes Hwy and explore the incredible Lakes Basin with over 45 alpine lakes.  This road then intersects Hwy 89, in Plumas County, where you can either turn north to Blairsden-Graeagle or south past Whitehawk and back into the Sierra Valley.  

From snowmobiling to snowshoeing, from hiking to biking, along with, fishing, camping, cross country and back country skiing, horse back ridding and wild life viewing; Sierra County offers it all.
