There’s only three weeks until IRONMAN Lake Tahoe and there are countless cyclists preparing for it in the Lake Tahoe, Squaw Valley, Truckee, Northstar and Kings Beach areas. The race takes place on September 21st. Athletes will compete for 50 qualifying slots for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. It begins on a cold Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m. at Kings Beach State Recreation Area where contestants will participate in the 2.4-mile swim, with a water temperature between 65 and 70 degrees.
From there, riders will embark upon the 112-mile bike course with 8000 ft. + of climbing. On the course from Kings Beach to Tahoe City, cyclists will enjoy stunning views along the shores of Lake Tahoe. They will then race down the Truckee River corridor to the historic Town of Truckee. At this point the course turns back toward Lake Tahoe loops through Northstar California and climbs over Brockway Summit with a 7,200 foot elevation before returning to Kings Beach. Cyclists then commence a second loop which will end at Squaw Valley ski area. Nutrition will be available at aid stations on the course.
The transition to the 26.2-mile marathon run begins at the Village at Squaw Valley, travels along the Truckee River Bike Trail to the end of the Trail before it crosses Hwy 89, and returns to Squaw Valley. There will be aid stations approximately every mile on the run course.
This is obviously a very important event for triathletes but it is also a great spectator event. To get all the information including a course map, click on the IRONMAN Lake Tahoe website.
