As you drop your child off at the ski school this winter, it’s easy to imagine that someday, their future could hold a ski career like Travis Ganong’s, a Squaw Valley hometown hero!
Travis got his start very early, attending the Mighty Mites peewee program deepened his love of the sport while giving him a great outlet to test his skills. He soon followed his older sisters into the race program.
Travis Ganong was born and raised right here in Truckee, and grew to be an American World Cup Alpine ski racer who specializes in speed in both the Super-G and Downhill events. In 2009 at the age of 21 he made his World Cup Debut, and then he represented the nation in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi where he placed fifth in Downhill. But it wasn’t until 2015 when he won Silver at the World Championships in Boulder and had four World Cup finishes in the top ten in 2016, that we began to see his true world-class potential.
In 2016 Travis finished the season ranked 25th in Overall World Cup (all disciplines combined) standings, 11th in World Cup Downhill and 19th in Super G. Then in December 2016 he made us proud again starting this season with a seventh place finish in the Val d’Isere Super G Opener. and on Jan 27, 2017 he had his first Downhill win in the Kandahar downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER), It was also the first time an American racer won a Downhill on that course. This is a big win for him and the US Ski Team. So far this year,(as of Feb 15th) he is ranked 21 in Overall World Cup standings, 6th in World Cup Downhill and 14th in Super G.
He has these U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS TITLES;
- 2013, Super G, Squaw Valley, CA
- 2010, Downhill, Aspen, CO
- 2010, Super G, Aspen, CO
We can’t wait to see what his bright future holds!
Travis says “I love freeskiing and big mountain skiing just as much as racing, and they both kind of help out the other.”, and what better place to feel the powder under your skis and the wind on your face than Squaw Valley? Go Travis, go!
