In 1973 Luggi Foeger was inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame for his contributions to the American Ski industry. Whether you’ve heard of him or not, you can see his contributions in the landscape of our area.
Luggi was born in 1907 in Innsbruck, Austria. He developed his skills in Tyrol which is a western Austrian state in the Alps. The area is famous for its ski resorts and beauty. He skied competitively and then became a trainer but moved to the USA during WWII. During that time he became one of the trainers in the 10th Mountain Division teaching the enlisted men winter survival skills needed as they traversed mountain ranges in Europe.
Luggi ran ski schools at many of the area resorts including Sugar Bowl and Alpine Meadows. He also helped design Northstar California and Diamond Peak. He was lauded for his conservation-minded designs that focused on the skiers perspective and enjoyment. Luggi Foeger passed away on December 11, 1992 while living in Incline Village, NV.
