There is a plethora of projects in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee areas scheduled for various stages of development in 2015. Early next year Environmental Impact Reports—an easy read of only one or two inches thick or more—will be released on these proposed developments.
Kevin MacMillan, managing editor of the Sierra Sun, has written an article describing five such projects.
• Canyon Springs is a 185-lot development near Glenshire.
• Squaw Valley Expansion will add approximately 1500 bedrooms, 850 lodging units and a Mountain Adventure Camp recreation facility to the Village at Squaw Valley.
• Incorporate Squaw Valley is proceeding with a financial study to determine if the town would be economically feasible.
• Martis Valley West is a land swap which would preserve 6,376 acres in Martis Valley while allowing 85 acres to be developed along the ridgeline inside the Lake Tahoe Basin.
• Joerger Ranch is a proposed 67-acre development at the junction of Brockway Road and Highway 267 in Truckee for commercial/retail, office, industrial, residential and open space land uses.
There are two positions on the proposed land uses. The developers promote the idea that these projects will enhance the area (and their profits) while the other side is the common argument “not in my backyard” by those who oppose everything, everywhere and at any time. MacMillan suggests that it is too early to form conclusions until all the studies have been completed and the reports read.
