A big fear while skiing, boarding, and backcountry touring is an avalanche. Face your fears and enroll in the Avalanche Course offered monthly January through March 2017 at Squaw Alpine.
This course follows the Avalanche Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) curriculum and is taught by AIARE qualified Instructors. Learn how to identify dangerous slopes, ways to avoid them, and how to perform a rescue. You’ll practice the necessary steps with a rescue partner. Learn what to do if a slope starts sliding while you’re skiing downhill. There is also training in safe backcountry touring technique
In the 2015-2016 skiing season, there were 28 avalanches that resulted in injuries or death in the US. There have been two avalanches this season so far where two people have died. One of those happened in a closed area. California has had 32 avalanche deaths since 1986/87. Be prepared to avoid dangerous areas and know what to do if an avalanche occurs.
To qualify, you need to be an intermediate to expert skier or snowboarder and have a beacon, probe, shovel, and needed touring equipment. These courses sell out quick so make a reservation ahead of time. Make your arrangements online or call 530-452-4349.
