Lake Tahoe is honored to be a stage for women in this year’s AMGEN Tour of California. The 2017 multi-stage event will cover nearly 575 miles of terrain May 11-20. A complete calendar of events and the host cities is available.
The Tour de France-style road race will feature medalists, World Champions, and Tour de France contenders.
The AMGEN Breakaway from Heart Disease Women’s Race empowered with SRAM is in South Lake Tahoe for Stage 1 and 2 on May 11 and 12. Half of the sixteen teams will be US based. The race is part of the UCI Women’s WorldTour.
Stage 1 covers a counter-clockwise 72 mile loop around Lake Tahoe. The uphill finish to Heavenly Mountain Resort will be a 1 mile climb at an average 7% gradient.
Stage 2 starts and finishes at Heavenly Mountain Resort as well, but features a new course that includes Carson River Basin, Washoe Basin and the Kingsbury Grade which is a brand new challenge for an AMGEN race course.
Over the two days there are 5 Queen of the Mountain inclines where riders compete to climb the elevation gains in the lowest cumulative time. Winners are awarded special jerseys.
Stage 3 continues in Elk Grove on May 13th and May 14th will take the finale to Sacramento, where the Men’s AMGEN Tour begins.
