Our four-legged hometown heroes are the Squawdogs, or more officially, The Squaw Avalanche Rescue Dogs. This program was founded back in the 1980’s with a single dog and handler. They’ve grown steadily, and now have 6 active, certified dogs on the hills, and another puppy in training.
Squaw uses the Canadian CARDA training standard and hosts annual Avalanche Rescue Dog Seminars for dogs and their handlers. Students attend from all over the United States to attend this intensive week-long seminar.
The Squawdogs not only perform rescues on the slopes and in local parks, but they and their handlers also offer avalanche education to local schools and youth groups around town. Don’t be surprised to meet one of them at school, around town, or on the slopes!
