As the temperature drops and second homeowners move back to the city, most of the world is thinking about going back to school, work schedules and planning events. Not in the Tahoe area. North Lake Tahoe locals are taking a big breath of fresh air as our Autumn shoulder season approaches. Shoulder seasons in Tahoe are the in between tourist months when many locals decide to take time off to travel, work at home, have family time and enjoy our mountainous backyards. The buzz of finishing construction projects and chainsaws are heard all around as we prepare for this upcoming El Nino winter.
Our community, Squaw Valley is officially named Olympic Valley, but if you want to fit in with us locals, call it “Squaw”. Squaw has undergone many changes since Wayne Poulsen and Alex Cushing met and founded Squaw Valley Ski Resort in 1948. The community still has a long way to go. One thing most powder hounds can agree upon is milder and milder winters have occurred since the Ski Resort was founded. Yet there is still an increasing population and change is in the air. Olympic Valley has a new charter school for K-12 and growing community involvement. So what keeps us here? For many, the wonderful summers, the supportive community, serene shoulder seasons, and the hope of another epic winter keep us here amidst the climate change. With talk of an El Nino season being just weeks away, every local, vacationer, second homeowner and travelling tourist is wondering- what does Mother Nature have in store for us this winter? Will it be enough to support this growing community?
Stay with us and read along as we report on El Nino early next week…plenty more to come!
