Bears in the Lake Tahoe area are doing two things this time of year: fattening up for the winter hibernation and finding the ideal spot for a den. Surprisingly, bears can fit into very small spaces and are attracted to crawl spaces, under porches and decks. In an article in the Sierra Sun, Ann Bryant, director of the BEAR League “estimates that at least 50 or more bears hibernate under homes in the Lake Tahoe area every winter.” Imagine what it would be like if a mother bear gives birth to two or three cubs in the crawl space. Would you like to evict them in the dead of winter? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is urging owners and guests to bear proof their properties. Secure all openings, remove all food, close and lock all doors and windows, and more. For a comprehensive list of these precautions, refer to the article in the Sierra Sun.
