Tahoe City is celebrating 10,000 years of habitation beginning with the Washoe settlers who spent the summer months camped on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Basketweaving was an integral part of their culture and continues today creating functional and ceremonial containers. A Gathering of Native American basketweavers will be held at the Gatekeeper’s Museum in Tahoe City, August 18 – 19, 2013. “Basketweavers will show and sell Native American arts and crafts.” Also featured at the Gathering will be dancers, jewelry makers, bow and arrow makers and a demonstration—Nuts to Soup—of the traditional preparation of raw acorns to a finished soup. Washoe elders will be present at lunchtime to tell stories that have been handed down through generations. This is a great event to learn more about the indigenous culture and history in the Lake Tahoe area. To read more about the Gathering, go to the Sierra Sun website.
