“According to Californians Against Waste, Californians use more than 19 billion plastic grocery and merchandise bags every year.” The Town of Truckee staff has proposed a ban on plastic checkout bags and a fee on recyclable paper bags. Such a ban has been adopted in San Francisco, Portland and North Carolina. Other mountain destinations that have implemented a ban include Aspen and Telluride, Colorado. Feedback was solicited from the community and 70% of survey participants supported a ban. In any case, the Town of Truckee encourages residents to use cloth bags. The Town Council has agreed to explore the idea but believes there are several questions that must be answered before taking any further action. Is there another alternative? What effect will this have on local businesses? Will tourists choose to shop elsewhere? Who would be affected? And more. Truckee Town Council members asked the staff to research their questions and report back. To review this developing story, read the following articles
