Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s (TRPA) controversial new regional plan will give more planning control to the local communities over development. Four story building heights and developer incentives it is hoped will attract private investment and bring communities like Tahoe City, Kings Beach and Incline Village out of the time warp that has kept them in the 1970s and helped drive development to surrounding areas like Northstar, Martis Valley, Squaw Valley and Truckee.
The new plan is partially and act of self preservation by the TRPA to avoid the dissolution of the agency as a result of a Nevada Senate bill that mandated a new regional plan by the end of 2012. It is also an attempt to counter the effect of the reduction in both federal and state funding that is no longer as plentiful as in the past.
The December 12th passage of this plan has resulted in very mixed reactions; the local business community has had a very positive reaction while the environmentalists generally have not been very positive with the exception of the League To Save Lake Tahoe which has supported the plan.
